Hebei Hua Ao Hospital: A New Benchmark in Medical Architecture

2022 Winter Olympic Games' Medical Center Showcases Innovation and Sustainability

The Hebei Hua Ao Hospital, designed by Ling Chen, is a testament to the integration of architecture, landscape, and interior design. This trauma treatment center, a supporting project for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, embodies the spirit of the Olympics while providing an international standard medical treatment environment.

The hospital's design concept is inspired by a "snow ribbon," a horizontally shaped structure that presents varying window heights based on different orientations and functions. This design effectively controls sun shading and daylighting, reducing the demand for air conditioning and creating a smart, modern hospital image. The interior design incorporates elements of ice and snow sports, such as movement tracks and snow crystals, to create a dynamic, clean, and smooth aesthetic.

What sets the Hebei Hua Ao Hospital apart is its commitment to sustainability and technology. The building is one of the most sustainable structures, with a facade design that is stable, concise, and contemporary. The roof features a solar collector plate to save electricity, and the double first floor eases the flow of people. The hospital's waiting spaces are arranged in an enclosed shape to promote communication and create a family atmosphere. Art sketches and landscape art are strategically placed in the indoor environment to distract patients and create a calm, relaxed atmosphere.

The hospital, which covers a land area of 45.26 Mu and a building area of 133,000 M2, is an international and intelligent medical institution. It integrates the functions of medical treatment, rehabilitation, and science and education. During the Winter Olympics, it primarily provides medical and transit services focusing on trauma first aid and critical care for athletes and tourists.

The project, which started in April 2019 in Zhangjiakou and finished in December 2021 in Rimini, was put into use in January 2022. The design pursued eternal value, reflected in the endless space life. With the concept of "technology + humanities," the project took into account evolving technology and changing community needs. The hospital's planning was arranged along the narrow and long land, with medical units arranged from north to south. The landscape resources on the west side were maximized in the form of an "L" plane to create the best rehabilitation environment for users.

The design of the Hebei Hua Ao Hospital faced several challenges, primarily the need to redefine traditional medical design in light of global health system upgrades. The design is an integration of professional experience in various fields, such as healthcare design and technology office headquarters design. As an integrated design project, architects, landscape architects, and interior designers worked together to refresh the understanding of medical facility design from a more diverse perspective.

The Hebei Hua Ao Hospital has received recognition for its innovative design, winning the Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2022. This award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
